What is PRINCE2®

PRINCE2 (PRoject IN Control Environment) is the most widespread methodology for project management. Thanks to its flexibility and versatility, it is used across disciplines to manage large and small projects. PRINCE2 certification has become a global standard not only in project manager positions.

    Project management

A tool for effective and efficient change management

PRINCE2 defines a project as a "temporary environment" that has been created to implement one or more products as defined in a Business Case. The project is characterized by the fact that it has a beginning, an end and clearly defined parameters: schedule, budget, quality, output.

Project management can be used by anyone and anywhere. No matter the segment, area, size or geographical location of the organization. Project management gives each organization the power to transform visions and plans into real forms and thus strengthen its own competitiveness. Each project has a predetermined start and final state that we want to achieve. The project management methodology will help you.

Project management is therefore intended solely for the purpose of implementing changes. For example, an upgrade of an information system, construction of an object, marketing campaign, production of a product or service. The project addresses what, when and how to do it, with what resources and in what quality. The project differs from normal (operational activities).

The aim of the project is the implementation of changes. The project is always temporary, it has a beginning and the end. Each project is unique in what it brings to users. In contrast to operational activities, the project is much more risky; it is not about everyday activities, processes that are well established in the organization; Working on a project requires managerial skills, great planning and management.

    PRINCE2

It is the most sought after project management methodology!

In over 200 countries around the world and this number is still growing. Organizations and managers around the world liked project management according to PRINCE2 mainly because it is a general methodology that can be applied to any project, regardless of scope, type, organization, location and culture.

PRINCE2 includes a set of principles, topics and processes. Thanks to this, you can adapt the project to current requirements and the environment. The PRINCE2 project management process model will walk you through the life cycle of projects and will teach you to plan, manage, complete and successfully deliver them.

    7 Key Principles

Learn highly effective project management tips: Principles + Topics + Processes

    7 Principles

    How to successfully manage projects.

It presents 7 effective habits that are used by all successful project managers. These principles include managing "in stages" and "adapting" the style of project management to take into account its complexity.

    7 Topics

    Basic PRINCE2 approaches.

The main topics include, for example, Risk Management or the Business Case, which defines the rationale for the project. This is important, it is a reference point that compares the results of the project with the business objectives.

    7 Principles

A sample of previous experience will teach you best practices.

Experiences that affect your project in the past can be both positive and negative. The PRINCE2 methodology is used with both good and bad. PRINCIPLES summarize the experience of all those involved in the project. The methodology accepts that not everything can be strictly prescribed or still applied in real practice. Business case

What should be the output of the project and in what quality? Whether it is a product or a service - the methodology helps to implement only those steps that clearly lead to the goal of the project.

    Organisation

The comprehensive set of PRINCE2 methodology processes includes stages in the entire project life cycle from the beginning, through planning to the end of the project. Everything is carefully packaged as a recommendation of the PRINCE2 methodology.

    Quality

Defines tolerances and allowed deviations of the project from the planned goal. In practice, this principle will protect you from a poorly implemented project.

    Plans

What should be the output of the project and in what quality? Whether it is a product or a service - the methodology helps to implement only those steps that clearly lead to the goal of the project.

    Risk

Every project managed according to the PRINCE2 methodology should have its justification in business. If there is no justification, the project is terminated.

    Change

The life cycle of a project has its stages. The PRINCE2 methodology best defines how to plan, monitor and control a project based on these stages.

    Roles and responsibilities

Successful project management is not just about the role of a project manager. Large and small projects can have a variety of other roles or stakeholders.

    Project Manager

The Project Manager is a key role and authority in the project, although it does not have the highest position.

Responsible, delegates and reports activities and tasks to the extent of the powers it obtains from the Project Board.

    Project Support

Project Support is an optional feature that is not necessarily a project, but in some cases is a valuable aid.

This function can be delegated to the project manager. It always depends on the expertise, size and requirements of the project.

    Project Assurance

Project Assurance addresses and guarantees the obligations of suppliers, users and management.

Project Assurance must be independent of the role of Project Manager. Why? Project supervision cannot, by its nature, delegate activities to a project manager.

    Project Board

The Project Board is responsible for executive or program management, which is important for strategic decisions at the level of project objectives. Communicates with the project team and the client (stakeholder) of the project.

    Executive

The project sponsor (Executive) is responsible for the project throughout the life cycle. It guarantees that the project will be implemented according to the approved financial plan, connecting the requirements of users, investors and suppliers.

    Team Manager

Team Manager guarantees production - delivery of products in such quality, schedule and budget as required by the Project Manager (to whom, among other things, is responsible and reported).

    Senior Supplier

The Senior Supplier represents the stakeholders responsible for the design, development and implementation of the project / product. Responsible for quality from suppliers and for technical integrity / compatibility of the project.

The more complex the project, the more Senior Suppliers can be within one project. Due to the specializations required by the expertise with regard to the diversity of suppliers.

    Senior User

The Senior User is responsible for the specification of user requirements within the implemented project. Checks whether the final solution meets user requirements and the requirements correspond to the assignment in terms of quality, functionality and user accessibility.

Larger and more complex projects can have more managers in the role of Senior User. Even after the end of the project, the main user continues to represent the requirements at the level of the program or user interface.

    Change Autority

Change Authority. The Project Committee may delegate the powers required for change plans, change requests and other exceptions to a separate group or individual, which is the Change Authority.

The project manager can take over some powers and competencies from the Change Committee, which can facilitate the implementation of the project (eg Work Packages).

Who owns and develops the PRINCE2 project methodology?

Office of Government Commerce (former owner).

Founder of the methodology, the original holder of the certification scheme. It was founded (1996) by the British Public Administration Reform Development Group: Cabinet Office, resp. its subordinate organization OGC (Office of Government Commerce) in cooperation with another organization APMG - International, which is one of the Examination Institutes for Axelos. Licensing rights and intellectual property have been the responsibility of the OGC for 18 years. Since 2014, the newly formed AXELOS Group has held the exclusive rights.

    Axelos is now developing PRINCE2.

An organization formed in a three-party coalition jointly by the Cabinet Office on behalf of Her Majesty's Government (HMG) of Great Britain and also spol. Capita plc - the largest companies at the level of government, local government and the private sector. The use of the methodology remains free from the beginning, PRINCE2 can be freely used by anyone. Axelos wants to work on regular updates so that the methodology still meets current managerial requirements for project management.
